I WANT MORE THAN👍 (2021)

“I want more than 👍” is a study that explored design directions to improve ZOOM’s icon system. The icons in ZOOM are limited (2021), preventing users from expressing dynamicity. As this challenges collaboration, this study took a user-centered approach to reflect user needs for enhancing the utility of ZOOM icons.
A participatory workshop was conducted, adopting the paper-prototyping method for rapid brainstorming. Participants freely created their own icons that they desire and tested the icons out during a ZOOM brainstorming session.
The study suggested three design directions for ZOOM’s icon system: it should improve turn-taking in video communication, provide diversity in shape and size, and thoroughly reveal users’ states and actions.
