OLFACTORY PUPPETRY (2024)
Sensory Affective Playful Workshop
Olfactory Puppetry is a method that merges olfaction and puppetry to explore possible scenarios and roles of olfactory social robots—robots that emit smell for affective purposes.
Olfaction was merged into puppetry in two different ways. First, olfactory devices that spray or vaporate smell were employed to puppetry, and participants could utilize the devices to emit smells whenever they wanted. Second, olfactory potlucks were conducted—participants were invited to bring their own smelling objects and use them throughout the puppetry.
The resulting scenarios of Olfactory Puppetry provided clues of what people expect of olfactory social robots, as well as fostering discussions on what new interactions could be made possible by adding olfactory qualities to social robots.
